October 2024 Canadian Cannabis Brands By Sentiment
Introduction
Thanks for joining us as we take a close look at Canadian cannabis brands and their trending performance across six separate Reddit communities. These discussions are organized by brand popularity, specifically in terms of their trend score, which captures the amount of attention each brand received over the past month.
This score includes upvotes, downvotes, and comments, all measured through a decaying algorithm to weigh newer activity more heavily. Sentiment analysis, powered by a large language machine, evaluates whether the attention is positive, negative, or neutral, giving us a clearer picture of how each brand is perceived.
Method
The trend score for each brand is derived by calculating the total interactions—upvotes, downvotes, and comments—on posts mentioning the brand across various Reddit threads. These interactions are weighted by time, meaning newer activity has a higher impact on the score.
To differentiate between positive, negative, and neutral interactions, we use sentiment analysis, which evaluates the tone of the posts. The sentiment score is then broken down into three categories: total trend score (overall attention), positive trend score, and negative trend score.
280 brands were mentioned in October, down from 282 in September.
On average about 1/5 of trend score awarded to each brand was found to have negative sentiment. Nineteen percent (19%) of the trend score awarded were towards posts were determined to have negative sentiment. Positive sentiment accounts for 76% of the trend score. The remaining 5% was neutral or undetermined.
Total Trend Score
This section highlights the top cannabis brands by trend score, capturing both positive and negative mentions. This metric reflects overall brand visibility and impact within the cannabis community, regardless of sentiment.
Top Performers
Sixty Seven Sins leads with an impressive trend score of 13,813, far surpassing the next-highest brand, 1964, which scored 7,761. New to the market, Sixty Seven Sins has made a strong first impression. Following closely, Carmel Cannabis ranks third with a score of 7,397, likely boosted by recent all-in-one product releases that have received mixed reviews.
Mid-Range Performers
Tuck Shop, Woody Nelson, Simply Bare, and Tribal fall into the mid-range, with trend scores between 2,900 and 4,000. Tuck Shop tops this group with 3,941, indicating strong engagement, though it trails the top three brands. Simply Bare and Woody Nelson are also close in performance, each scoring just above 3,600. Both brands frequently appear in our weekly "What's Hot" posts, but here they fall short of Sixty Seven Sins and 1964 in overall trend score.
Lower Tier but Notable Brands
Brands like Highxotic, EastCann, Northern Canna, and MTL scored between 2,000 and 2,600. Although these scores are lower compared to the top brands, their presence within the top 20 out of over 2,000 brands reflects an established foothold in the cannabis community. Good Supply, Kwall, and Back Forty follow closely with trend scores around 1,600 to 1,800, indicating steady but lower levels of attention.
Bottom of the List
At the lower end of the top brands, Pura Vida, Cactus, and RedeCan each scored below 1,600, yet their inclusion in this list highlights a growing presence in the market. Pure Sunfarms, with a trend score of 1,302, rounds out the list; though it ranks lowest here, it is still notable as one of the most-discussed brands.
This overview of trend scores provides a snapshot of the most visible and impactful cannabis brands in October 2024, with Sixty Seven Sins standing out for its debut performance and other brands demonstrating varying levels of engagement and market presence.
Positive Trend Score - Top Brands
Now we focus on the top 20 cannabis brands mentioned positively on Reddit, highlighting the most favored brands among Canadian reviewers. For cannabis brands in Canada, securing a place at the top of this list reflects strong reviewer satisfaction and reader reception.
Leading Brands
Sixty Seven Sins stands out as the clear leader, with a trend score of 11,300, indicating high levels of positive engagement and consumer appreciation. This impressive result follows a surge of reviews last month, with the majority of sentiment being positive. Following Sixty Seven Sins, 1964 holds second place with a score of 7,872, showing strong positive perception but with a noticeable gap from the leader. Carmel Cannabis rounds out the top three with a score of 4,254, benefiting from a solid base of positive mentions but trailing behind the top two.
Mid-Tier Brands
Brands such as Tuck Shop, Woody Nelson, Simply Bare, and Highxotic form the mid-tier, with trend scores between 2,500 and 3,600. Tuck Shop leads this segment with 3,621, showing robust positive sentiment that places it close to Carmel Cannabis. Woody Nelson and Simply Bare also stand out, frequently appearing in positive discussions and scoring over 3,200. Highxotic and Tribal are close in trend score, suggesting steady positive feedback from reviewers, though at a slightly lower level than the leading brands.
Lower-Tier but Respected Brands
Brands like Volo, Northern Canna, and MTL, with trend scores around 2,000, are well-regarded despite not reaching the very top of the list. Known for quality products, these brands may receive fewer reviews compared to the leading brands. EastCann, Kwall, and Pura Vida follow with scores between 1,500 and 1,700, indicating reliable positive responses, albeit with less volume than some of the higher-ranked brands.
Bottom of the List
The remaining brands, including Homestead, Back Forty, FIGR, Amani Craft, Pistol and Paris, and Keff, scored between 1,100 and 1,400. Although these brands occupy the lower end of the top 20, they still represent the top 10% of brands mentioned positively on Reddit, reflecting a notable presence in the Canadian cannabis community.
Negative Trend Score - Top Brands
Now we focus on the top 20 cannabis brands that received negative mentions on Reddit, highlighting areas where these brands may need to address consumer concerns. For Canadian cannabis brands, appearing high on this list suggests a reviewer experienced dissatisfaction or issues with certain products and made a post about it. However, it also provides an opportunity for brands to engage with feedback and improve.
Most Criticized Brands
Carmel Cannabis leads this list with a trend score of 3,348, indicating a notable amount of negative sentiment. There have been a few posts this month about issues regrading their all in one disposable live resin products. Carmel received more positive trend score than negative trend score. Good Supply follows with a score of 1,696, as a budget brand it is not a surprise to see them on the list. Sixty Seven Sins, despite its popularity for positive mentions, ranks third here with a negative trend score of 1,500, highlighting that while it garners praise, it also faces some criticism.
Mid-Tier Criticism
Brands like Snicklefritz, Pure Sunfarms, Joi Botanicals, and Cookies form the mid-tier for negative sentiment, with scores ranging between 800 and 1,200. Snicklefritz and Pure Sunfarms, in particular, have been noted in consumer discussions, perhaps indicating that these brands are polarizing, drawing both positive and negative attention. Joi Botanicals and Cookies follow closely, suggesting that they too face mixed perceptions among users.
Brands with Moderate Negative Feedback
The remaining brands, including Lord Jones, Cactus, Simply Bare, and Smoker Farms, have scores between 700 and 800, indicating a moderate level of negative sentiment. The lower end of the list includes brands such as EastCann, Irie Craft Cannabis, Freedom, Tuck Shop, and Volo, with scores below 700.
Summary
Sixty Seven Sins dominated this month, leading in overall trend score and positive sentiment, with about 80% of its trend score being positive. 1964 secured second place with an impressive 99% positive trend score, highlighting strong consumer appreciation.
On the negative side, Carmel Cannabis ranked highest, with around 45% of its trend score attributed to negative sentiment. Good Supply followed, with 90% of its trend score falling in the negative category, suggesting some significant consumer concerns.
